NZ Marathon Title 53 - in 1953, Arthurs wins the New Zealand Marathon title in 2:41.29

Left: In 1958, Arthur coached Ray Puckett for the national marathon championship and felt so good he ran it himself, finishing second to Puckett. This picture shows the easy running style Lydiard runners developed. Arthur was 41years old.

Below: Arthur chases Noel Stanyer through Newmarket during the Onehunga - Auckland road race in the 50s.

Left: Arthur, in Lynndale colours, winning a mile race at long-gone Sarawai Park in Newmarket.

Right: Arthur taught toughness in Finland in 1966 when he stripped down in the snow and sub zero cold to show the muffled - up Finns how soft they were. In a 20k training run around a lake, he finished first.

Left: Running repairs/maintenance. Arthur cools off hot feet during a training camp he ran in north Taranaki.

Right: Arthur Lydiard the Master coach.

Arthur never told his pupils to do anything he wasn't prepared to do himself. Here, in his late 50s, he joins some of his young runners in hill training on One Tree Hill. The slopes on the left and right behind them shows how steep the climb was.
