The Legend Event

For the last nine years a running event has been held in West Auckland to pay tribute to the late and world renowned athletic coach ARTHUR LYDIARD. The event is known as The Legend and it contains 4 events being, The Lydiard Legend Marathon, Arthurs Half Marathon and the Titirangi 10km and 5km road runs. The marathon and half marathon courses are run over 75% of the original training course that Arthur Lydiard used to train his world class athletes. This year's event is to be held on Saturday 13th September 2014 with all events starting and finishing at Shadbolt Park, New Lynn.

The Lydiard Challenge Cup

The Lydiard Cup is a new concept designed to encourage the youth of New Zealand to experience the benefit of daily exercise through a school team environment cumulating in an official event.

The event will run in conjunction with the Legend Event with the two age group categories competing in the 5km and 10 km event respectively.

Of great importance to the Trust is to reach out to every student to ‘give it a go' hence the award to school that has the biggest participation numbers.

Awards for excellence will handed to the school team(s) at the official prize giving.

The Legend Charitable Trust

The Trust was established to carry out the legacy left by Arthur Lydiard. Its ambition is 'to see the whole world running' and to achieve this goal it believes that habits formed at a young age regarding exercise and healthy living is the start. The trust, through its programs, wants to identify those with talent so that it can be enhances and nurtured for the coming years.

Fundraising

The Legend Charitable Trust would like to encourage students who participate in this event to raise the funds for the entry fee. We are the Trust feel that this would be a worthwhile team building effort and take the pressure off individual families who may find it difficult to contribute the entry fee. However, this is at the discretion of each individual school and the school management.

To implement the youth program we have eliminated some major costs by staging the event within the Legend Event. However, the Trust wants this program to stand alone (hence the splitting of the awards functions, and the actual format of the event) and therefore there are cost associated with staging the Lydiard Challenge Cups.

The trust would like each participating school to fund raise for the trust through a school initiative.

Awards Function

The awards function will be held in the weeks following the event. A time and place will be confirmed closer to the event.

A morning tea will be served. The trust will secure a significant guest speaker for the event.
